2019 Chinese Biomaterials Congress & International Symposium On Advanced Biomaterials was held in Dalian



The 2019 Chinese Biomaterials Congress and International Symposium on Advanced Biomaterials, organized by the Chinese Society for Biomaterials and hosted by the Affiliated Zhongshan Hospital of Dalian University, was held from August 22-25 at the World Expo Center in Dalian, China. Mr. Tan Chengxu, deputy secretary and mayor of the Municipal Party Committee, Mr. Xiao Shengfeng, director of the Standing Committee of the Municipal People's Congress, and Mr. Wang Qiyao, Chairman of the Municipal Consultative Conference, attended the opening ceremony. Prof. Zhang Xingdong, Academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, foreign academician of the American National Academy of Engineering, president of the International Union of Societies for Biomaterials Science and Engineering, Prof. Fu Xiaobing, academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering and President of the Chinese Society of Biomaterials, Mr. Wang Jinliang, deputy director of the Standing Committee of the Municipal People's Congress, Secretary of the Party Committee of Dalian University, and Mr. Zhang Zhihong, Vice Mayor attended and delivered  speeches. Mr. Yi Qingtao, Municipal Government Secretary-General, Mr. Meng Changgong, Dalian University President, Mr. Gao Dabin, Director of Bureau of Science and Technology, Mr. Zhao Zuowei, Director of the Municipal Health and Health Commission , Mr. Lu Zhong, Deputy Director of the center for medical device evaluation of National Medical Products Administration, Mr. Shi Xinli, Minister of the center for medical device evaluation of National Medical Products Administration, Mr. Liu Bin, Minister of the center for medical device evaluation of National Medical Products Administration, Prof. Zhao Dewei, Executive Chairman of the Congress and Dean of Affiliated Zhongshan Hospital of Dalian University attended the opening ceremony.

Prof. Zhang Xingdong, President of the International Union of Societies for Biomaterials Science and Engineering, gave his speech ”the current biomaterials business was in a stage of rapid development in China and the world. This conference can not only strengthen academic exchanges, but also promoted industrial development. The development of biomaterials was inseparable from clinical contact and is an international trend.”


Prof. Fu Xiaobing, President of the Chinese Society of Biomaterials, said in his speech that the theme of this conference was the deep integration of biotechnology and medicine. He hoped that the deep integration of Chinese materials science and medicine would bring the sources and exports for the research and development of biomaterials. At the same time, it would also bring new products, technologies and methods for clinical experts in disease prevention, diagnosis and rehabilitation, and ultimately benefits patients.


Mr. Wang Jinliang, Deputy Director of the Standing Committee of Dalian Municipal People's Congress and Secretary of the Party Committee of Dalian University, mentioned in his speech that Dalian University paid high attention to medical education and medical health work, and he sincerely hoped that this meeting would become a further expansion of exchanges among institutions, hospitals and scientific research institutions, and strengthen the bond of friendship and collaboration in medical development, and become a spiritual and cultural feast for experts and scholars.


This conference is the highest level and largest event among previous conferences. It is believed that this conference would definitely contribute to the innovation and development of biomaterials. Mr. Zhang Zhihong, Deputy Mayor of Dalian, sincerely hoped that all experts and scholars would introduce and impart their experience and knowledge, and also provide suggestions for Dalian's biomaterials technology innovation and industrialization development, and strenghthen academic exchanges. At the same time, he hoped that Affiliated Zhongshan Hospital of Dalian University would make new and greater contributions to the development of Dalian's biomaterials industry.


The Chinese Biomaterials Congress was a great event for the entire Chinese biomaterials industry and an important activity for the international biomaterials community. Professor Zhao Dewei, Dean of Affiliated Zhongshan Hospital of Dalian University, emphasized that this congress would focus on the latest developments, research hotspots and further development of biomaterial science and medicine, and further exchange and discussing the achievements transformation. Through the communication between peers from different disciplines and fields and the collision of different academic ideas, inspiration and ideas can be inspired, cooperation can be enhanced, and the development of biomaterials science and industry can be promoted.


Prof. Qiu Guixing, Prof. Luigi Ambrosio, Representative of the European Society of Biology, Prof. Ki Dong Park, Representative of the Korean Society of Biology, and Prof. Horst Von Pecum, Representative of the American Society of Biology, delivered speeches respectively. Mr. Wang Yunbing, Vice Chairman of Chinese Society of Biomaterials, presided over the opening ceremony.



The Science and Technology Award ceremony of CSBM was held at the opening ceremony. Academicians Xiaobing Fu and Yingjun Wang, deputy secretary of the municipal Party committee, mayor Chengxu Tan, director of standing committee of municipal peoples congress Shengfeng Xiao and chairman of municipal consultative conference Qiyao Wang presented the awards to the winners.


After the opening ceremony, Academicians Changsheng Liu from East China University of Science and Technology, Jeffrey Hubbell from University of Chicago were invited to give plenary speeches.


The theme of this conference is “In-depth integration of biotechnology and medicine”. Over 20 Chinese and American Academicians, 40 international authoritative experts, and 5,000 industry elites attended the conference. It has been the highest and largest event since the first Chinese Biomaterials Congress. The "International Advanced Biomaterials Conference", "The Fifth China-US Biomaterials Forum", " Annual Meeting of Biomaterials Branch of Chinese Society of Biomedical Engineering", and "Forum on Innovative Orthopedic Materials and Collaboration between Medical and Engineering Professionals" were also held concurrently.

The "Forum on Innovative Orthopedic Materials and Collaboration between Medical and Engineering Professionals" was an important part of this conference. It has Academician forum, orthopaedic master forum and four branch forums including joints, spine, trauma, and comprehensive venue. More than 100 Academicians and Changjiang River scholars, National distinguished young scientists and overseas Chinese high-levelled talents have been invited to report during the forum. Professor Weiming Wang, vice president of our hospital and expert of sports medicine, presided over the opening ceremony.


Academician Guixing Qiu from Peking Union Medical College Hospital introduced the application of 3D printing in medical treatment, including the detailed history of its development and application. The application status and medical value of 3D printing in the fields of orthopedics, dentistry and maxillofacial surgery were analyzed at home and abroad. Academician Qiu summarized the practical problems including high requirements of technology, hardware and software, high-price, small beneficiary group, and mismatch between degradation and tissue regeneration in the process of scaffold design. Finally he gave a outlook to prospects of the printing speed, pharmaceutical, 4D and official policies and regulations etc.


In terms of modern engineering technology and orthopedic development, Academician Yingjun Wang mainly introduced bone defect regeneration and novel biomaterials, accurate repair of bone defects and 3D technology. Compared with foreign calcium phosphate, the developed product has the characteristics of adjustable pore diameter and interconnected pore diameter, good pore connectivity, and adjustable porosity and non-uniform partials. It breaks through the bottleneck of large-scale load-bearing bone defect regeneration materials. Because 3D technology is the integration of three-dimensional visualization technology of image information, computer simulation technology and personalized preparation technology and other engineering-field technologies, the research and development of personalized precision repair technology can provide more space for clinical applications.


In response to the role of cell therapy in burn wound repair, Academician Zhaofan Xia from Changhai Hospital of Second Military Medical University introduced the transplantation of epidermal cells, and analyzed the influence factors of skin 3D bioprinting, namely cell source, biomaterial, bio-ink, printing method and digital modeling. Combined with actual cases, the lung injury repair by applying cell therapy was also introduced.


After the 70-year development of orthopedics in China, the subject system has been improved day by day. Clinical research has been “leading” in some of the current projects from “follow-up” and “parallel running” at the beginning, however, there is still a certain gap compared with the developed country in terms of basic research and theoretical innovation. Academician Yingze Zhang from the Third Hospital of Hebei Medical University introduced a series of theoretical innovative research carried out by his team in the past 40 years, which is guided by clinical research and aimed at clinical problems. That is the fracture homeopathic reduction and fixation theory, calcaneal fracture internal pressure theory, bone dynamic deformation law, secondary injury, bionic fixation theory and knee joint uneven settlement theory.


In the research of the transformation path of regenerative medicine, the Chinese People's Liberation Army General Hospital Fu Xiaobing academician focused on the development of growth factors. Firstly, he analyzed the concept, function and application of growth factors. And he combined the research of growth factors with his own academic growth, he believed that the study of growth factors opened up a whole new field, from simple surface repair to visceral damage repair, from promoting repair and regeneration to regulating endocrine metabolism, and from early wound burn treatment to the entire biomedical field. At last, he stressed that no innovative research was done blindly, and research without conversion applications was done in vain.


Academician Kam W Leong of the Columbia Medical Center in the United States, from the positive and negative aspects of gene delivery, respectively, describes the progress of research on gene transfer biomaterials, and describes the biological effects of nanobiomaterials in the medical field.


Osteoarthritis was a joint disease characterized by cartilage destruction, which was caused by a variety of factors that caused fibrosis, cleft palate, ulceration, and loss of articular cartilage. Minister Liu Bin of the State Food and Drug Administration introduced the treatment of articular cartilage injury, including conservative treatment, surgical treatment, tissue transplantation treatment, tissue engineering treatment and gene therapy. He focused on the technical review points in the US, Japan, and China's guidance documents related to the registration of cartilage repair medical device products and the technical consensus on the evaluation of quality evaluation of regenerative knee cartilage implants (draft for comments). He also conducted a case study on the international and domestic registration of cartilage repair medical device products.


Frank Witte, director of the Brandenburg Regeneration Medical Research Center in Berlin, Germany, described the benefits of today's biodegradable metal biomaterials in patients from oral, trauma and cardiovascular surgery.


In the orthopaedic master forum, a total of 8 well-known orthopaedic and biological experts at home and abroad gave speeches at the conference. Professor Zhao Dewei, famous orthopaedic expert, dean of affiliated Zhongshan Hospital of Dalian University, gave a report titled “Application of 3D Printing in Hip Joints”.

At the four-day conference, 28 special reports were established, such as a new biomedical metal materials and applications, biomedical composite materials, bone repair and regeneration materials, medical imaging materials and molecular probes, marine biomaterials, tissue engineering and stem cells, and medical applications of 3D printing technology, what’smore, 5 sub-forums were established, such as young scientists, biomedical raw materials and high-end consumables, and "wall communication", "Rapid Fire Session", satellite meeting, etc. also were set up. Experts at home and abroad have made special reports in various fields, and exchanged and discussed on the latest developments in biomaterial science and medicine, research hotspots, next development priorities, and transformation of results.

At the closing ceremony, the "Excellent Oral Report Award", "Excellent Wall Report Award" and the "Advanced Individual" and "Advanced Collective" of the China Biomaterials Society, and the award ceremony of the "Industrialization Forum and the First China Biomaterials Society Innovation and Entrepreneurship Competition" were held.

This conference has far-reaching influence on promoting the development of biomedical materials science and industry in the world. Through the exchanges between peers from different disciplines and fields, and through the collision of different disciplines to inspire ideas, enhance cooperation, and promote the development of biomaterial science and industry.
